Who Does What at Chalice?

Chalice has no full-time staff:  instead we have a part-time pastor, an intern pastor, a volunteer music director, and an accompanist for our worship services.  We look to members of the congregation to take an active leadership role.  Our emphasis is on who we are as a People of God within the Christian tradition and how best to worship and serve both God and humanity.   Contact information for the pastor is on the contact page of this website.

pastoral STAFF:

Rev. Gerry Brague

Gerry Brague has been on the staff of Chalice Christian Church for several years, becoming the sole pastor in July 2005.  He was ordained as one of the first openly gay men by the Disciples of Christ in November of 1997.  Previously he has served as an Associate Conference Minister in the United Church of Christ, as Director of Community Life for an AIDS Housing Program and as the Assistant to the General Director with Church Women United in New York.  Gerry holds his M.Div. degree from Andover Newton Theological School and his B.S.Ed. from Virginia Tech.  He is interested in how culture and religion intersect and completed a certificate program in Digital Culture Ministry in 2003.  He enjoys baseball (particularly the Giants), traveling, the theater, music and crossword puzzles.  He lives in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco with his partner, Allen, and their
cats, Baxter & Audrey.

Corey Hidlebaugh

Corey Hidlebaugh is our intern pastor and is a divinity student at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA. He is currently in care for ordination with the Christian Church (DOC) in Northern California and Nevada. Corey holds a BA in history from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Music Leadership:

Lisa Haley (pictured at right) is our volunteer choir director.  She leads us in gathering music prior to each worship service and conducts our occasional choir.  Lisa, when not poring over hymnals and worship music, is an Operating Room nurse.

Scot Meacham Wood (pictured at left) brings his many years of church musicianship to our services at Chalice.  His imaginative and reflective improvisations at the keyboard help to inspire our worship and the exciting experience of hymn singing.  His thoughtful music is especially inspiring as we transition into our time of prayer.

 Lay Leadership:

The church is governed by our Board of Directors which is made up of our elected officers and at-large board members.  In a congregation as small and active as Chalice, most members are involved to some degree.  Each person is free to select their own comfort level in participation and involvement in the activities of the church.  We also have a Board of Elders which provides spiritual leadership of the congregation, taking turns at serving at communion weekly with one of the pastoral staff.

Currently, Ev Penzel is serving as Moderator and Allen Foster is our Vice-Moderator.  As our key leaders, they preside over bi-monthly board meetings.  Other officers are board secretary, chief financial officer, financial secretary and team leaders who serve the congregation with their time, energy and gifts.
