Who Does What at Chalice?

Chalice has no full-time staff:  instead we have a part-time pastor, a volunteer music director, and an accompanist for our worship services.  We look to members of the congregation to take an active leadership role.  Our emphasis is on who we are as a People of God within the Christian tradition and how best to worship and serve both God and humanity.

pastoral STAFF:

Rev. Gerry Brague

Gerry Brague has been on the staff of Chalice Christian Church for several years, becoming the sole pastor in July 2005.  He was ordained as one of the first openly gay men by the Disciples of Christ in November of 1997.  Previously he has served as an Associate Conference Minister in the United Church of Christ, as Director of Community Life for an AIDS Housing Program and as the Assistant to the General Director with Church Women United in New York.  Gerry holds his M.Div. degree from Andover Newton Theological School and his B.S.Ed. from Virginia Tech.  He is interested in how culture and religion intersect and completed a certificate program in Digital Culture Ministry in 2003.  He enjoys baseball (particularly the Giants), traveling, the theater, music and crossword puzzles.  He lives in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco with his husband, Allen, and their cats, Baxter & Audrey. Contact information for the pastor is on the contact page of this website.

Music Leadership:

Lisa Haley (at right) is our volunteer choir director.  She leads us in gathering music prior to each worship service and conducts our occasional choir.  Lisa, when not poring over hymnals and worship music, is an Operating Room nurse.

Ann Willard (at left) is our accompanist at the piano.  A member of the congregation since its inception, Ann volunteers her time and gifts and provides us with music that helps us in our worship of God.  She accompanies our hymns and leads us into a time of prayer with a thoughtful piece of music each week.

Lay Leadership:

We rely heavily on our members for leadership.  We have two boards that govern our church:
  • The Board of Elders is made up of five people who provide spiritual leadership to our congregation.  Elders serve communion at the Table, care for the needs of members and those outside our walls, assist the pastor in his duties, and help to remind us of our purpose as a group of God's people.
  • The Board of Directors is made up of six members who make any financial, personnel, and legal decisions that must be made.  They meet every other month and do the work necessary for us to keep going as a congregation.
Additionally, we hold congregational discussions every other month during which all members, whether elected to a position or not, can voice their ideas, visions, concerns, and dreams.  We hold communication to be a very high value and strive to keep everyone aware of what is going on amongst us.
